Gov Obi gives N62.2m to 2,500 ex-Biafran soldiers, 64 ex-Rangers players

AWKA — NO fewer than 2,500 ex-Biafran soldiers and 64 former players of Rangers International Football Club of Enugu have so far received about N62.5 million upkeep allowance from Anambra State governor, Mr. Peter Obi.

While the ex Biafran soldiers received N5,000 each, former Rangers players, many of them who are down with ill health, received amounts ranging from N200,000 to N1 million to enable them obtain medical treatment either locally or abroad, in addition to monthly stipends they received from the state government.

Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Chief Joe Martins Uzodike, while handing the cheques to chairman of former Rangers players, Mr. Luke Okpala, for onward distribution to his colleagues on behalf of the governor, said Obi’s gesture was to further recognize the heroic roles played by the footballers immediately after the Nigerian civil war.

Uzodike said: “Governor Obi has observed that these people cannot be left to suffer after their enormous contributions in helping to reintegrate Igbos into Nigeria through sports after the war.

“The ex Rangers players who receive the monthly stipend are not limited to Anambra or Igbos alone, but all the former players, whether they are from the old Bendel State, South West or the North.

“In addition, the governor has secured an office space for the former players at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu for their meetings and social activities.”

For the ex Biafran soldiers, the commissioner said the N5000 was to give them a sense of belonging as many of them could no longer fend for themselves.

He recalled that only last month, the governor donated about N2 million to the inmates of Oji River Leprosy Center in Enugu State and socialized with them.

ROADS TO ONITSHA SHOPPING MALL TO BE DUALISED

The State Government will expand parts of Awka road to further widen the access road to the Onitsha International Shopping Mall. Governor Obi who was speaking while inspecting the area said that was in addition to the ongoing dualization of the Park Road, GRA.

The shopping mall is being executed under Public Private Partnership. The Governor said the expansion would be extended to the Ontisha General Hospital axis while an Amusement Park will also be built in the area. He explained that that will enhance free flow of traffic in the area and complement the on-going upgrading of infrastructure in Onitsha and environs.

The Governor expressed satisfaction with the level of work at the kick off of the project and assured that all necessary infrastructures will be put in place to ensure smooth take off of the facility.

A representative of the collaborating firm, Mr. Osita Okonkwo, said the contractor had fully mobilized to site and ha procured all needed materials for the project, assuring that the shopping mall would be completed on schedule and according to specifications. Mr Okonkwo thanked the Governor for awarding the contract for the access road and for commitment to realizing the project.

Also speaking, a representative of the Shoprites Group, Mr Gerald Frits, said that when functional, the mall would reduce the cost of goods as they would be working with local farmers in the State. Mr. Frits said the facility would also provide a lot of employment opportunities, and commended the vision of Governor Obi in attracting high class investments to the State

Israelis brand selves in solidarity with animals

Animal rights activist is branded with number 269 in Prague, Czech Republic, Wednesday, June 26, 2013. Animal rights activists from 269 Life movement have adopted the act of human branding to raise awareness about animal rights. The movement, 269Life, was launched with a public branding in Tel Aviv last year and has since mushroomed around the globe, with brandings held in Italy, the United States, Argentina and beyond. On Wednesday, 11 people were branded in central Prague. The group's name is derived from a number branded on a calf that activists encountered at an Israeli dairy farm last year. JERUSALEM (AP) — Sasha Boojor squirmed and struggled as black-clad masked men yanked him out of a cage and branded him with a hot iron. While the smell of seared flesh was disturbing, he said, this shocking and painful act was worth it: He was showing solidarity with animals that suffer branding on farms around the world.
Boojor claims 30 people have brand themselves worldwide, and thousands more support their effort to make the case for animal rights. The group, like other animal liberation movements, opposes the use of animals for human consumption, research or entertainment, going far beyond demands by more moderate groups for humane treatment and painless slaughtering.
Critics, including some animal rights sympathizers, believe this movement is going too far.
A public branding in Tel Aviv last year launched the movement, called 269Life. Since then it has spread, with brandings in Italy, the United States, Argentina and elsewhere. On Wednesday, 11 people branded themselves in the Czech capital, Prague.
The group's name derives from a number branded on a calf that activists encountered at an Israeli dairy farm last year. They chose its number, 269, as a way to individualize the calf, which is still alive.
"We aim to bring the pain and horror other animals face each and every day out of the suppressed darkness and into the realm of everyday life," the group states on its website.
In recent months, the group has staged sensational and sometimes gruesome stunts in Israel. They have freed chickens from coops and defaced fountains with severed cow heads while dyeing the water blood-red.
The brandings set them apart from other animal rights groups.
Last October, Boojor and two other activists sat in a mock pen in a central Tel Aviv square, caged in with barbed wire, with tags bearing the number 269 dangling from their ears. One by one, they were hoisted out by men in ski masks and held down to be branded, as bystanders watched in horror.
In video from that event, Boojor is seen writhing on the ground before his forearm is stamped with the number 269.
"What's really unpleasant is the sensation — a feeling of the skin being torn off — and you can smell the flesh burning," said Boojor, a 27-year-old from Tel Aviv who works odd jobs. "You feel out of control, and it's easy to understand how animals feel when they are in that situation."
The video of the branding has nearly 270,000 views on YouTube and was a key factor in the group's growth. The group was active on Facebook early on — the international movement's page has more than 33,000 "likes" — and has received inquiries from activists elsewhere interested in starting their own branches.
The movement is loosely organized. The different branches are in touch but choose on their own what works locally. Boojor said activists from Holland were attending Wednesday's Prague branding to learn how to stage their own. Leading activists from each country report to Boojor on how many people have been tattooed or branded, and the group uploads photos of those markings to its website.
Eleven activists, including four women, participated in Wednesday's event in square in central Prague, branding themselves with a hot iron on various parts of their bodies. The activists wore black underwear with metal chains around their necks and were taken one by one behind a wire fence where they sat and waited to be branded.
A few dozen people watched, while the smell of burning flesh wafted in the air. Some onlookers applauded at the end.
"As I expected it is a very intense experience," said Ondrej Kral, one of the activists. "Now, I feel even more motivated to fight for the rights of animals."
As 269Life has raised its profile and increased its activities, it has also run afoul of Israeli police.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said nine people were questioned in connection with the fountain stunt, and that an investigation is underway into the group's activities. He called the group a "cult" that "seems quite extreme."
"Going to jail doesn't disturb me," Boojor said. "The captivity of animals is what disturbs me."
Boojor said the branding should have a special resonance in Israel, because Jewish victims of the Nazi Holocaust of World War II were marked with permanent identification numbers in concentration camps.
The use of that imagery sparks outrage. Uri Hanoch, an 85-year-old survivor from the Dachau camp in Germany, said such a comparison is "a sin."
He said, "Branding animals is a matter of identification. Doing it on humans is a disgrace."
Boojor said he has seen progress on the issue of animal rights in Israel, with an increasing number of vegan restaurants sprouting up and vegan products available to a greater degree. Still, he has yet to persuade barbecue-loving Israelis of his view that animals have rights similar to those of humans.
Israel passed an animal welfare law in 1994 that protects animals from abuse and explicitly permits the slaughter of animals for food. Critics charge that police enforce the law selectively and tend to ignore abuses in the farming industry.
Last year an Israeli TV program exposed ill-treatment of animals at a large slaughterhouse in northern Israel, where workers were filmed beating and shocking calves and lambs. Lawsuits demanding the closure of the slaughterhouse were launched, and the cases are ongoing. Most abattoirs in Israel slaughter animals according to Jewish dietary laws, which profess to be humane.
The country has a multitude of animal rights groups with different approaches.
Ben Baron, a spokesman for the Israeli animal liberation group Shevi, said he does not oppose 269Life's approach but called it "aggressive," adding that he thinks educating people on animal rights is a more effective way to raise awareness.
"I understand and relate to the pain, but I don't think that is the way, personally," he said.
The international animal rights organization People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals said the brandings spark important discussions about the issue.
"It's an eye-catching and a head-turning way to draw attention to a very serious message," said Ashley Fruno, a senior campaigner for PETA Asia-Pacific, which oversees the Middle East. PETA itself has been criticized for extreme projects on behalf of animals, sabotaging testing facilities among other activities.
Fruno said several PETA activists have tattooed themselves with the number 269.
"This is a badge of honor for these people," she said.

UNLAWFUL DEPORTATION – MALAYSIA

Rotimi Oteniya:UNLAWFUL DEPORTATION – MALAYSIA
UNLAWFUL DEPORTATION – MALAYSIA
I read with concern on the Facebook about the above. I know that an action of a Nigerian may certainly bring about this inaction of the security agents in Malaysia. The arrest of many Nigerians in Malaysia may be as a result of tip-off but many innocent people are affected in the process of the clamp-down on Nigerians. Many homes are forcefully entered; people injured in the process and at the end of the day over 50 people are due for deportation without trial. What for? Why this kind of unjust treatment on our people? Let our political leaders wake up and improve on amenities, provision of jobs and security of lives and properties at home. Many are pushed out of Nigeria because of these reasons among others.
Though there can be excesses on the part of the authorities and their agencies. I live in Italy and I can tell you what some of our brothers and sisters are doing here and other parts of the world are uncalled for. They are negatively RE_BRANDING us- denting our Nation’s already soiled name. May, I build on Esther Eric statement (one of the contributors) who wrote that: “What they don’t know is that the covenant of prosperity is provoke from ABOVE not ABROAD.” It is a statement of fact, no doubt. Psalm 75:6 says “For exaltation comes neither from the east, Nor from the west nor from the south.” It comes from NORTH-pole pointing to heaven or ABOVE not ABROAD.
It is important to note therefore that many people abroad are not really making something big as some people at home think. In fact, many people at home earn more, live better than those of us abroad yet their demand is really weighing MR & MRS ANDREWS (those that checked out of Nigeria) down. Let it not be that “from those who don’t have, the little with them will be retrieved and added to those with more than sufficient. Please, pray for your relation abroad and write them to “REMEMBER THE SON/DAUGHTER OF WHOM HE/SHE IS.”
Let me all sound a note of warning to those of you in NIGERIA trying to sell all you have in order to travel abroad. There is nothing there for now. Put yourself together and make it better at home. It is fact that the Scripture says “A man found treasures on a plot of land, sold all he had to buy it up.” That was then not now. 1 Timothy 6:6 say “Now godliness with contentment is great gain.”

2015 elections may end up like NGF poll – Amaechi

Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi
Source: PUNCH

Rivers State Governor  Rotimi Amaechi on Wednesday lamented the  crisis rocking the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and then threw a bombshell: 2015 elections  may end up like that of the NGF.
“Let me put it on record that the way things are going,  2015 elections will end in this manner where people will win democratic elections and those in power will not accept the results,” he said at a stakeholders’ symposium on the  review of the 1999 Constitution   in Abuja.
Amaechi, who won the May 24 NGF election in Abuja, wondered why some people  would be backing Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State, who contested  against him and lost.
Amaechi described Jang and  his supporters as non-democrats and accused the Nigeria Bar Association of losing its  voice by failing to condemn the actions taken by Jang and his supporters after the NGF poll.
President Goodluck Jonathan is the major supporter of the Jang faction of the NGF  and Amaechi’s outburst appeared to  the audience to  be mostly  directed at him (the President).
Amaechi, who said he  had  been trying to avoid the microphone because  of too many problems in the country, told the gathering that since he had been made to mount the rostrum, he  was ready to make “headlines.”
First,  he blasted the NBA,  then Jang and the “government that supports him”.  Amaechi  described himself as the authentic NGF  chairman, saying that what  Jang was leading was  a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum.
The  governor said, “The NBA cannot afford to lose its voice, but you have lost your voice. For the NBA to see a free and fair election, where 35 governors who govern 35 states in the nation, who make decisions for hundreds of millions of Nigerians, for NBA to say that ‘if they can’t organise themselves dissolve,’ you have lost your voice.
“I say it and I want to be put on record that anybody who supports the Jang group is undemocratic.
“Before that  the NGF election, we chose who will be the returning officer , we appointed our director-general to be the returning officer   and we voted.
“Everybody voted. Everybody, including Jang. Jang was even among the first persons to vote.
“When I won my brother from Akwa Ibom State(Godswill Akpabio) stood up and said, ‘there’s a document I have where 19 governors have signed for us.’
“And Jang says the Northern  States Governors’ Forum  supported him. Which Northern governors? They should have voted for him. He also  said the PDP governors supported him before the election, then the PDP governors should have voted for him.
“What you have that Jang is leading is another faction of the PDP Governors’ Forum, not the NGF.
“Anybody, whether NBA or government that supports Jang’s faction is undemocratic.”
He urged Nigerians and the judiciary  to rise up and defend their rights.
Amaechi  said, “My Lords,  you must defend  our democracy  and  Nigeria. We don’t have any other country anywhere else, the only country we have is this.
“We must be prepared as a people to defend our rights; we must be prepared as a people to hold government accountable. We must be prepared as a people to demand accountability.”
Amaechi urged Nigerians to resist a situation “where non-government officers that have no public function can order the Inspector-General of Police  to change commissioners of police.”
The governor, who  stated  that it was not proper for the President to appoint commissioners of police, said there was the  need for state police to be included  in the ongoing constitution review.
Apparently referring to his problems with the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Amaechi said, “You were talking about state prisons and state police. We don’t have state prisons; we don’t have state police.
“A situation where governors are left helpless and hopeless because somebody here in Abuja determines who becomes my commissioner of police, and tells him what to do, and he makes the city uncomfortable and ungovernable, is not the kind of constitution that I will want to support.”
Although Amaechi’s  insistence on being the authentic NGF chairman was corroborated by Niger State Governor and Chairman of the N S G F ,  Babangida Aliyu,on Wednesday,  Jang dismissed the Rivers State  governor’s claim that he (Jang) was  leading a faction of the PDP Governors’ Forum.
Jang, who spoke through the Sole Administrator of his NGF faction secretariat, Mr. Osaro Onaiwu, wondered  if Amaechi was leading the opposition governors forum.
Onaiwu  said, “The governors of Ondo and Anambra States, Dr. Olusegun Mimimo and Mr. Peter Obi respectively, are they members of the PDP?
“These governors are members of the  Labour Party and  the All Progressives Grand Alliance, yet Amaechi is saying we are leading a faction of the PDP Governors’ Forum.
“Is he not a member of the PDP himself? The Governor of Kano State, Dr. Rabiu Kwakwanso  nominated Jang for the position. Is he not a member of the PDP as well?
“The Governor of Akwa Ibom State is the chairman of the PDPGF.  If Jang is leading a faction of the PDPGF, which faction is Amaechi leading? The opposition governors’ forum?”
But Aliyu said at   the turbaning  of his Deputy,  Ahmed Ibeto, as the  Wali Raya Kasar Nupe and the PDP Chairman in the state,  Abduraman Enagi, as Sardauna Ayuka Nupe by the Estu Nupe Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, that Amaechi won the NGF election.
Aliyu, who also gave insight into what happened during   the  NSGF meeting  ahead of  the NGF poll,  maintained  that no Northern governor betrayed anybody.
He said, “Many people have been asking why governors could not unite   to elect a leader. But my answer is that we were united and  we elected a chairman. If anybody recognises another person as a chairman, the onus is on us to  solve our problem. We must recognise Governor Amaechi as NGF chairman”.
“Governor  Jang  emerged as a candidate from the north after the NSGF discovered that there was an issue between Bauchi State Governor Isa Yuguda and the Kastina State Governor Ibrahim Shema.”
He said the NSGF intervened and agreed that Jang should contest.I  told them that we must go and insist on consensus but in a situation where election took  place,  the conscience  of the people prevailed”.
Aliyu added, “Thirty-five governors voted. Nineteen voted  for one candidate   and 16 for a particular candidate.  Those who go around destroying reputation should just bury  their hatchets.
